Question #1:

Daphne,

What do you feel you have done in your entire life that is the most accomplished thing you have done...Maybe not finished completely but the most accomplished YOU feel you have ever done that has made you proud of who you are?

Katie

Katie,

The thing I feel most satisfied or proud of-though I'm not sure that's the right word-is that I am living in the life I dreamed of. Here is what I mean: I had always wanted to act, make a living at it. I pursued it, without ever hesitating, acting somewhere ever since i was a kid, including churches and living rooms!. However, once you get what you want it often is QUITE different than you imagined. It has been extremely challenging over the years, as well as amazing and magical, but I feel good about the way I have stayed pretty much in tact. Facing my fears and working hard have always paid back.

Daphne

Question #2:

Daphne,

I read that you were at the Best Buddies Ride from Jim Caples article recently and you really put him and a lot of the participants to shame for a great cause. First way to go ! So do you ride just for charity events or are you an avid cyclist too (which I am guessing that you are)?

If you ever come out East and too Williamsburg, VA you are welcome to join myself and some of our club members on one of our rides which are pretty nice as well.

Sincerely,
Rich

Williamsburg, VA

Ahh Rich,

If only. That was a blast! I am glad it's in print somewhere! Did it mention that I beat everyone including two Shrivers and the men's time!?? I was riding an hour every day this summer, just for fun. But I don't even own a bike. I just kicked into competition mode for the race, probably because an ex-boyfriend was riding, and there were TV cameras!

Thanks for the invite Lance Armstrong!

Question #3:

Dear Daphne,

I read on the Web that you never posted the before and after levels of mercury toxicity, so they questioned whether you really had it or not. I saw you responded by talking about the fog you were in, and how it went away when you de-toxed. But would you be able to let the public know what the numbers were?

Thanks,

Kathy

Dear Kathy,

I never knew there was speculation. Mercury is measured with different tests, using different scales depending on the lab the doctor uses so you can't compare. A man once told me his mercury "wayyyy up there a 26" I had never heard of the number 26. I was told by my doctor that my levels were, according to the test results from her lab, quote: nearly double the safe level. Which is what I have always said. Not the highest she'd seen, but I should not get pregnant with those levels. I was tested also by a nutritionist in another state who confirmed and recommended detoxification. There you have it, if people doubt my story, that is out of my control.

Thanks,
Daphne

Question #4:

Dear Daphne,

I am very concerned about industrial pollution. I think that the use and abuse of tetrachloride compounds has decreased some over the years and scientists preach about the reduction of the Australian continent sized ozone hole. Would you confirm this theory or rather should their be a major reinforcement of the environmental issues in this regard? From Venezuela, thank you very much dear Lynn and girls !!!

Edgar Arvay

Dear Edgar,

Industrial pollution is clearly a major culprit causing dangerous climate change, not to mention contaminating our bodies, causing all kinds of illnesses including cancer, and killing off animal and plant species all over the world. There are so many great books about this. I am presently reading The Weather Makers, By Tim Flannery. A great way to get specific information is Google Alerts. Type in your subject, ie: Industrial pollution or Ozone or Climate Change, and every day you'll get all articles written on your topic. Convenient way to learn something everyday!

Go for balance, not excess...

Question #5:

Daphne,

Can you tell us what inspired you to become an actor? I've always admired your work, especially Melrose Place and Beautiful People. I look forward to your future projects!

Sarah M.

Dear Sarah,

I have always and only wanted to act. Now that I've been doing it for 30 years...I started way early...I also like developing projects and writing, but acting is the one thing that is like my skin, my breath, my dreaming. It was the make believe I saw in it that captured and inspired me! I used to make our guests sit in the living room and watch skits I'd made up with my sister. I also had a dress up box as a child and I'd put costumes on and loved pretending I was someone else. Creativity is essential to being happy.

Daphne

Question #6:

Hey Daphne

Beautiful People was such an amazing show, and you did a really awesome job playing Lynn. I was just wondering, in light of the cancellation, is there anything we as fans can do to help perhaps have this show re-aired or picked up by another network? I've known shows to be re-aired due to "popular demand," could we perhaps make something like this happen? If not, the show was amazing and I would have loved to see a second season! Thanks for the read and have a happy day.

Sincerely,
Kali

Dear Kali,

Thank you for asking about fans bringing the show back! And thanks for your kind words about the show. I have spoken to the Network heads, they loved the show but have made their decision, I really don't think it will change, but HEY! Why not go to the ABC Family site and write! Can't hurt. I wish I could resurrect Lynn, and the girls too. (I'm seeing them on Friday, I'll tell them about your letter and others).

Take care!

Daphne

Question #7:

Daphne,

What is your response to global warming skeptics who say that scientists don't have enough proof that global warming is a real problem? In particular, please see this article.

As someone who is not very knowledgeable about global warming, articles like that seem rather convincing, which I assume can be dangerous.

Tracy Kovach

Dear Tracy,

I believe the state of our environment is deeper than being a political issue. Everyone should want to protect, preserve, and restore our planet regardless of political party, religion, race, etc. The fact is that the last ten years have been the hottest on record, I believe 2005 was the hottest. The extreme weather that has occurred, and more to come are effects of climate change, which is worsening at an alarming rate. The writer you sent me is a conservative writer who says global warming is exaggerated by "liberals". I believe no one has the moral right to defend doing nothing. No one. Damage has already occurred in so many ways to animals, plants, and ecosystems. If you are getting your info from conservative sites, there is a Republican group called REP America. Check out their website at repamerica.org, read some studies, and let me know what you think!

Thanks for caring and asking, we all need to learn and act on the facts!

Daphne

Question #8:

Is beautiful people coming back for another season in fall of 06???? Everyone is dying to know! I'm the biggest fan of the show......I absolutely love it!

Miranda Sanchez

Dear Miranda,

Many have asked if Beautiful People is coming back and I am sad to say that is is not coming back in the fall. I absolutely loved doing this show, I loved the girls (in real life too), and I really loved giving life to Ms. Lynn Kerr, mother, woman and designer extraordinaire. I haven't loved playing a role and being a part of a project this much for a long time.

However, this is the biz. Watch my Lifetime movie in July for a different taste. It's a suspense. Then in July I am shooting a movie for ABC Family that will air this Christmas! Thanks for watching Beautiful People, it meant a lot to have fans like you, who liked it as much as we did.

All the best,
Daphne

Question #9:

Dear Daphne,

I would be very grateful to know your opinion of the well-publicised idea that a large number of British citizens - and especially youths - have no interest in politics or voting. Thank you for your courage & leadership in the pro environment & political causes.

Mike

Dear Mike,

I think people , especially young people don't get involved politically because they don't think it will matter. Young people are creative and express their views in other ways like with music, art, writing etc. In one way they are right, the political system is bogged down by...well, politics! The political system is a rather blunt tool for getting anything done. However, it is the system we have and I wish more people voted so they can experience the feeling of doing even one simple thing on behalf of themselves in the world. I love the feeling of standing in line with other neighbors who are all there for the same reason, to better the situation. We have a common thread in that moment. We all want things to be better, voting is saying to the world I am here, I take my life and the lives of others seriously.

It is too easy to not do anything, it is time for every single person on this planet to be responsible for themselves as a part of the whole. In my opinion we are in a state of emergency, look at the environment, the violence, the apathy. Everyone must acknowledge they are alive and awake and able to talk about things, write to the newspaper, write to political leaders, write to tv shows, vote, start a group in school, a blog,...be constructive and a part of the solution.

I know so many people in here in the entertainment business that are coming up with solutions, they really are out there caring, using there status and money and connections to help. Not eveyone, but more than one may think!!

Mike, I hope you stay in touch with your sense of caring and share it, spread it, we are our only hope. That's the fact. WE are the only ones here to fix what is broken.

Take care and be passionate,
Daphne

Question #10:

Daphne,

First of all I just have to compliment you on what a great job you have done portraying Lynn on Beautiful People, you really bring the character to life!! My question is what is the best thing about being a part of playing the role of Lynn? Thanks!

Chelsea

Dear Chelsea,

I loved playing Lynn SO MUCH!!! I like doing comedy, so I added things every chance I got. I loved Lynn's honesty, her passion. I got to be angry and in Maddy's face when she was stealing from us and using drugs. I loved being caring with the girls but when we went head to head (because my girls are tough!) It was exciting to flare up even though we loved each other. (after a take of fighting, I would want to make sure they were okay) I liked the romantic story line with Julian. Always love those! So it was fun getting close to Julian, wanting each other but not acting on it....until we finally kissed (THAT was a fun scene!) and James was great to work with. And it was great to work with Grant Show again, we really bonded all those Melrose years ago, and this time there was a trust and familiarity. Trust is very important when acting.

I hope I'll be a part of something as fulfilling soon, and that you'll watch!

Take good care,
Daphne

Question #11:

Daphne, How long have you been into meditation and chanting? I'm just watching one of my Krishna Das' dvds, and I saw you in it. Any ideas on how to make chanting into one's job or way of living? Or, any words of wisdom -- anything that comes to your mind at all or wanting to share -- would help. Thank-you. Namaste.

-- LJS

LJS,

Khrishna Das has been chanting for a long time and it is a very deep and personal act of devotion for him that began in India a LONG time ago. There are others I know who have started more recently. They are singers and or musicians who love doing it. I think they began wherever they were. I got involved in my local yoga centers, where I would hear of more chants and CDs, which I would buy. I have been to Sidda Yoga chants, Wah, Dave Stringer, on and on! It's a wonderful heart opening practice, and like anything else in life, if you follow your heart step by step, you'll find yourself where you belong. Look on my inner path page for the books and teachers that introduced me to meditation! Their books are awesome.

Peace,
Daphne

Question #12:

Daphne, I heard that you did a movie called "Christmas Do-Over," what was like to work with the funny actor Jay Mohr, did you expect anything like doing a christmas thing at least ten thousand times until it is perfect?

Michael Pan Vienna, VA

Michael,

Christmas Do-Over was a blast!! The nature of the script was confusing but I love a challenge! Jay is so funny, a pro that made me feel confident in our getting scenes right. You know when you work with someone who really knows their stuff? He reminds me of Donald Duck in that way, only a tad cuter. And Ruta Lee! A legend and such a professional.

Watch for me in more comedies!

Daphne

Question #13:

Dear Daphne,

I've been reading about all the wonderful things you've done for the environmental, particularly the focus on mercury poisoning. My question is: what does being an environmentalist mean to you, on a philosophical or a spiritual level?

Sincerely,
Marianne

Dear Marianne,

I spoke about mercury to illustrate how real our polluting the environment is! The coal powered plants that give us electricity (turn off lights when not in use!) dump mercury into the air, it drops into our water and fish become contaminated. As I ate tuna I was eating mercury. And cans of tuna is in every kitchen in the country.

I feel connected to the earth on many levels. When I eat fresh food without chemicals I feel and look healthier and I'm energized and feel positive. All spiritual leaders through out history went into nature to reconnect, to find their message of the soul, or to "talk to God". For good reason. Nature always calms me whether it's going down to the ocean or up into the hills, even a city park or the sun on my face. I instantly remember what is and isn't so important. I know that when people connect to nature and actively do things to help it, they feel better, more alive.

Thanks for the question. I'd love to hear how you have connected and felt after helping our precious Earth Marianne!

Daphne

Question #14:

Hi Daphne,

I'm a long fan of yours since I first watched The Sure Thing 21 years ago and I always enjoyed watching your performance on Melrose Place. Now that you've achieved so much on acting, have you ever thought about producing or directing movies and TV shows in the future? I think you can express your ideas, emotions and environmental activism through these forms of art. Carlo Carrasco Cebu City, Philippines

Dear Carlo,

I just finished producing and directing my first film! I have thought about it in the past, and have written over the years. I'm co-writing a tv project now. I love acting and will always do it, but it's been very gratifying spreading my wings.

Daphne

Question #15:

Dear Daphne,

I have to say that i'm more than ecstatic that you have your own webpage, and less than joyous that I just found it today. With that said, I have to say I grew up watching you, and more specifically in Spaceballs. Spaceballs was a movie that my entire family watched and laughed with while I was younger, and now to this day I can't help but laugh.

My question is, how was it to work with Mel Brooks? I admire his entire career, and love his entire catalog of movies, t.v. and screen plays and I'm hoping working with him is as pleasant as you are to watch 8-)

Thank you for playing Vespa, and thank you for caring so much about the environment. You are truly a role model in every sense of the word.

Take care,
Adam Campbell
Chicago, Illinois

Dear Adam,

Mel was awesome! I mean, let me clarify, he was a perfectionist and had us do 17 takes once.... or 26, something nuts like that...but awesome! He kept saying, "We're doing it for the kids, we're doing it for the kids." He was nonstop creative, coming up with new lines and shtick with Rick Moranis and John Candy on the set. And of course, after every take of his own closeup as Yogurt, he say, "CUT! PRINT! That was perfect! I was brilliant!!"

I adore him. He was always so great with his fans, always stopping for stories and photos. I was just told we may do a cartoon of Spaceballs! Stay tuned I'll let you know here!

Thanks for writing to my new site!
Daphne

Question #16:

Hi Daphne,

I think you are an amazing actress and have grown up watching you in several films! I have to ask what was it like to work with John Candy? He is one of my favorite actors and it was such a tragedy when we lost him. What are some of the most memorable moments working with him? Thank you so much!!

Marcy Ellison

Dear Marcy,

Thank you for the words. I loved John Candy. He was such a kind man! He had gifts made for the entire crew after we finished. I remember him being silly, telling jokes, or doing impressions before they yelled, "Action!" and I would still be laughing, and I was the one who had to keep a straight face! We are about to make a Spaceballs cartoon, and I wish John were here to join us.

Daphne

Question #17:

Daphne,

With concerns of mercury poisoning on the rise, do you have any recommendations for selecting and eating fish? I think what you're doing for the environment is great.

Natasha

Dear Natasha,

Look at my Mercury page for info on mercury and fish. I did research and put my finding there! Tuna and Swordfish are the most likely to be contaminated with mercury. As canned, cooked, and sushi. Most important to get tested, detox safely, but then WRITE to your law makers to strengthen the regulations on coal plants, which is where most of the dangerous neurotoxin comes from.

Stay healthy,
Daphne

Question #18:

Daphne,

Help! I dont have Netflix, but I would really like to get a hold of the TED documentary you mentioned. Is there any other way to see it? Also, can you please tell us more about it? Thanks! By the way, i am a HUGE fan and I think you're a fantastic actress!

Mary T., South Carolina

Dear Mary,

All the info for my new film is on the front page of my home page! I hope you get it and write me back with your thoughts of the film. It was a labor of love, and tons of hard work! I was feeling that we need more proof of positive things happening in the world and I hope the film inspires you to act on your own creativity and passions!

Enjoy~
Daphne

Question #19:

Hey Daphne, you're so great on Beautiful People and Christmas Do-Over. And a really nice job on American Dreams!

What is your next project ? A new tv show ? a new movie coming soon?

Thanks
Martin

Hey there Martin,

I've been spending this year producing. See my main page about the TED doc now out! We have had great screenings for the film with Q&As afterwards, and we may bring it into colleges. I am also recording a Spaceballs cartoon with Mel Brooks, and Joan Rivers which is a blast after all these years!! I also have been having meetings in New York about doing some theater there, and tv shows, including nonscripted. One must take naps too.

Thanks for writing!:)
Daphne

Question #20:

Silly question, but....Actually, you are the first celebrity I have ever seen take questions and that is refreshing. My twins (boy & girl) really want to go into entertainment and wanted some advise as to go about doing so. I want to protect them and what not and insulate them from certain elements. They have the looks (as you do) and that something special that everyone gravitates to them including adults.

Anyway, any suggestions or helpful hints?

Dan Engel
Mobile, AL

Hi Dan,

It is my strong opinion that anyone who gets into the business of acting should really love to act. Looks and charm may get one in many a door (and beware, there are a gazillion people ready to claim they'll "open doors") and may get you jobs even, but the time will come when your heart or their hearts will be broken. And then again. Your twins will need to have strong self esteem. Self esteem comes from working hard at what one loves to do. (An acting teacher said this to me years ago, and I think it's true.) I started with plays in school, in my town, going to an acting conservatory in high school, summer stock theater, majored in theater in college, private coaching, I've always loved it. Having those years of experience BEFORE I started professionally (at 20) are the reason I was cast in tv and film, and they are the reason I have maintained a career, and my self esteem this long. I fell in love with acting first. Not the rewards and perks and attention.

The other reality is, you won't be able to protect them or insulate them from so much of what they'll face.

Acting is such an amazing thing to do! But the business of it is very challenging, which is why loving acting is so important. If they act, and keep acting, opportunities will show up, doors will open.

Good luck,
Daphne

Question #21:

Daphne:

Apologies, but this isn't a question. I just had to write you after watching your amazing movie "TED: The Future We Will Create". My husband and I viewed the film straight from the Netflix website--the most eco-friendly way possible--last night!

I just have to tell you what a wonderful job I think you did on the film. I was completely inspired by the material presented, have joined TED, and couldn't help writing a gushing post about it here: bizzyblogging.blogspot.com/2007/07/ted-another-word-for-hope.html at my blog.

Thanks for bringing such important, thought-provoking, and above all HOPEFUL material to the masses. We need this kind of information and activity in the world now more than ever.

You totally rock,
Suzanne

Dear Suzanne!

Oh thank you!! I loved your blog! You really got it. This was a passion project for me. I'd never produced a film, didn't know how to, but knew the world needed reminding how brilliant we all can be. We're now finishing a deal with Showtime for tv airing, and another deal for dvd sales later this year, as well as foreign distribution.

So glad you were inspired. Your passion is energizing, thank you!
Daphne

Question #22:

Daphne:

I just saw your inspiring documentary about TED. As the recently termed out mayor of Delray Beach Florida I just formed a non-profit devoted to building sustainable cities. I am also working on a new city in Florida called Destiny, which will be Florida's first "eco sustainable" city. My question is two-fold: What the are the economics of TED? Are speakers paid? In addition to enrollment fees, are their corporate sponsors?

Two: How can we access environmental companies that would want to be involved in creating a city from a blank canvas...we want Destiny to be a model for the world.

Thanks for your excellent work.
Jeff Perlman

Dear Jeff,

That sounds wonderful! You remind me of former Mayor of Curitiba Brazil, Jaimi Lerner. He is an urban planner and did wonders for his city, responsible for massive sustainable transformation. I also greatly admire William McDonough in Virginia who designs entire sustainable neighborhoods in China. I'd look both up! And check ted.com for your sponsor questions.
~ Daphne

Question #23:

Daphne,

I'm one of those who believe in global warming. My question is, do you think the countries of the world will ever get past their politics to do something about it? I don't see it happening, until it's too late anyway. Also, don't the compact fluorescent light bulbs have mercury in them? I've been told this but never had it confirmed to me.

Many thanks for all you do.

Pat Moore
Pflugerville, Texas

Dear Pat,

I've learned that yes, compact fluorescent bulbs have a bit of mercury in them. Thermometers of the old days had 100 times more. The energy savings is 75 times more than regular light bulbs, and they last around 10 times longer. I think they're a better choice considering lighting is about 20% of household energy. I don't know about our world's countries getting their acts together, but I'm betting on people telling their politicians to act now.

~ Daphne

Question #24:

Daphne,

Have enjoyed all of your movies and TV features over the years. The recent TED documentary was great! I've been trying to do my part with the environment and recently purchased a '85 Mercedes Benz 300D to run on waste vegetable oil.Can you tell us what sort of vehicle you are currently driving and why. Also, on a industry note, what ever happened to the project "traveling bowls of soup"? Seemed like a good character for you and was looking forward to it being produced.

Thanks for your gift and talents to the world.
Take care and be well.

Kevin Pinkham
Colorado

Dear Kevin,

Yeah for your vegetable oil Mercedes! I have a friend who owns a restaurant and he's looking into getting a car that will run on the extra deep frying oil. I think that's awesome. I drive a Prius.

~ Daphne

Question #25:

First let me say you are an awesome role model. I love the way you use your status to help the environment. It must be stressful having your life. How do you like to reconnect to yourself and get away from all the stress.

Matt

Dear Matt,

Thank you for the kind words. I have had friends and role models; Claire, Alexandra, Don, Ed, David, Debra, Bobby are all people who love our Earth and live with the integrity to which I aspire.

My favorite way to reconnect and release stress is this: I Sit. Sit and breathe.

Try it: Sit comfortably wherever you are and close your eyes. Bring your attention to your breathing. Feel it in your body where it's most noticeable. Get specific. Maybe it's the moving of your chest, or abdomen. Can you feel it moving through your throat or coming through your nose? Notice the quality of each breath: gentle and tiny? smoothe and deep? energized and short? Keep watching.. When a thought comes into your mind, say to yourself, "Thinking". Then gently let it float away... and come back to your breath again, noticing it physically in your body... just ONE breath at a time. Try feeling one whole breath from beginning to the very end. Each breath is different I have noticed!

Your thoughts will come and take you very far way, you'll get caught up in a situation in your mind and maybe will get stressed or emotional, that's okay! Just let it go like a cloud floating by in the sky, and start with the next breath in your body, again, and again...

Maybe do it for a minute, or 3 or 20. Notice how you feel afterwards. For more about meditation the authors I love are Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield. They all have books and cds for all levels.

I'd love to hear how it goes of you, or anyone else who tries it!

~ Daphne

Question #26:

Daphne,

You mention in your Oprah article that you got shots of DMPS for your elevated mercury levels. A doctor suggested using Chemet for a high mercury level, but it smells nasty and is nauseating. How many DMPS shots did you get and did you have any side effects?

Thanks,
Ed

Dear Ed,

I don't know Chemet, but I do know some chelators may be too extreme for a human body. Please be careful. If I had high levels now, I'd take capsule supplements, DMSA perhaps. But the DMPS shots were okay for me. I took a few shots with two months in between. Look on my mercury page for other detox information.

~ Daphne

Question #27:

Daphne,

You are such a lovely and talented actress. I thought you were brilliant on Melrose Place, and fun to watch on Spaceballs. How do you stay looking so healthy and trim? Is there a special diet you follow or exercise regime?

Thank you,
Cindy

Dear Cindy,

Okay, first things first. I wore a corset in Spaceballs, that's good for taking many inches of the waist! I also cut way down on eating breads and other carbs during that shoot. I ate a lot of steamed vegetables and protein.

Over the years I have, like every other woman, tried to stay thinner than I am supposed to be. Now, I stay healthy by eating fresh, natural foods, I don't snack too much, I drink lots of water and I am active in ways I really like. I used to do a lot of yoga, bike ride, do Pilates and run. Lately I've been walking and using a treadmill. Women are under a lot of pressure in our society to be way to skinny. It's not worth it. Be healthy and treat your body with great respect. Love it. And don't forget, down time really helps with a healthy, trim body. When I am rested I crave less "carb" foods, I have energy and I am happy.

Daphne

Question #28:

Hi Daphne,

I was wondering if you had ever considered doing a show on Broadway. I am good acquaintances with the wonderful Kaitlin Hopkins, daughter of Shirley Knight, and she informed me that she met you on the opening night of her show, "The Great American Trailer Park Musical." Keep up the good work!
Carmine

Dear Carmine,

Yes I have considered Broadway! Ever since I was a kid doing plays. The idea of doing it terrifies me and thrills me right out of my mind. I went to see a friend in her Broadway show and afterwards I stood on the stage. What a feeling! I am looking into doing theater in New York. I hope to do it and please come! As far as features, yes I'd love to, if it's the right project, and I am reading scripts now.

Thanks,
Daphne

Question #29:

Hi Daphne,

You are certainly a role model for women in their 40s and a testament to the importance of caring and nurturing the self on all levels.

Having watched the season premier of "Nip/Tuck", I must ask if you actually had surgery for the show, or was it all illusion for the camera?

Warm Regards,
Karin

Dear Karin,

HAD SURGERY FOR THE SHOW?? No way!! I've heard of method acting but that would be going just a tad too far don't you think?! Twas the magic of the biz. Lights and smoke and mirrors. Lighting can do wonders for (or worsen) everyone's face. Some actresses of era's past knew how they were best lit and would tell the director where to move the lights to avoid drastic shadows that would not become them! I just trusted them on Nip/tuck. Often on a set I'll ask the DP (Director of Photography), "Say, where's that lovely little eyelight that makes a girl look so good? And they'll use it!
~Daphne

Question #30:

Hello Daphne,

I really enjoy your work both in Hollywood and Conservation World. I finally was able to view your Ted project on Netflix You did an outstanding job!!! I'm so excited to see you on Nip/Tuck that is one of my favorite shows.

What are your thoughts on Animal Cruelty? Good luck with your future endeavors!

Paula
Cheyenne, Wyoming

Dear Paula,

Glad you liked the TED movie! I do have friends who are devoted to protecting animals from cruelty. I love animals but haven't gotten involved as far as speaking out or picketing. I don't wear fur, but I do wear leather. I try to use cruelty-free makeup/skin and hair products but don't use only these. I know the horrendous quality of life of chickens, pigs, and cows that are bred for food. Horrible. I've had to limit my energy to my truest passion. Environment: Reducing carbon emmisions to slow/stop the CLIMATE CRISIS, and protecting our ever giving natural world.

If you'd like to share your views on animals please write us back!

Daphne

Question #31:

I am a mother of two girls and I never fed my girls tuna because I had heard of the mercury levels years ago. I didn't really know what the effects were or how serious it was, but I didn't really want to find out. Now there is a company that tests fish for mercury levels and certifies the each individual fish as a "low mercury" product. It is called Safe Harbor and I know you can get this product at Bristol Farms in Southern California. I now feel I can safely feed fish to my children, as well as myself. What do you think about this?

Gina Rogers

Dear Gina,

I ask my experts at the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) in Washington DC when it comes to mercury and tuna. They have a force of scientists. Here was the response to your question about Safe Harbor.

"It is possible that this fish really is low in mercury, but one other time when a different company told me they had low mercury tuna, the data they sent did not back it up. The numbers were only slightly lower than normal tuna."

They said they haven't seen data from Safe Harbor and so can't certify if it is okay, but would be glad to look at it if they send it. They would be even more happy if it turned out to be low enough to tell people to eat it. The NRDC believes in trust, but they verify.

Maybe write a letter to Safe Harbor asking to send data to NRDC.org!!

Let me know if you do,

Daphne

Question #32:

Daphne,

I am a 27 year old musician that travels a lot. I would like to know how I can have a positive effect on our fans, much like you have had on your fans? It seems that most of our performances revolve around a "party" atmosphere. I would love to hear more about how you are helping out in the Hispanic communities and what I may be able to do as a role model and entertainer.

Your pal,
Herbie

Dear Herbie,

You are in a great position to inspire!! What YOU say, has a lot of impact and people listen, even in a party atmosphere. Check out this site for rock bands who care about the environment and join your comrades...http://www.reverbrock.org. As far as hispanic audiences, go to my Environmental Justice page and memorize some of the facts. Latinos live in the worst air quality in the US, often in air quality that fails government standards. You can say this, let them know they need speak out, get involved in EJ groups locally and fight the conditions that violate human rights, and often laws!! Corporations are not going to clean those neighborhoods up unless they are made to do so!!

Thanks for your efforts Herbie, you are in a great position, let me how how it goes!

Question #33:

Daphne,

I have loved your work and followed your career with the utmost attention. I think you are in the perfect point in your career to guide me through my current predicament. I have found mild success in my personal career. I made it into a few movies when I was younger, then did some television spots, but now I am struggling to find constant work. I have had a few recent tv gigs, and just got a role in a stage play in the bay area of California. The problem is I don't really have any experience on the stage. I understand the transition from screen to stage has been disastrous for some performers. How do you think I can pull it off without doing injustice to the wonderful art that is live theatre?

Your devoted fan,
Casey

Dear Casey,

I am sorry I have taken so long in responding. Guess why? Because I was doing a play! It's a LOT of work.... If you are in it, or done, please let me know how it went, and what you learned about going from tv to stage! I was scared to do a play but wanted to develop that ability. It was exhilarating, but scary!! Every night I'd stand back stage wondering what on earth i was thinking to get myself into this! But every night, the audience would laugh, and I loved having them there responding. I tried to give them their money's worth and a good time. We did. I always think stretching yourself is a positive! Even if you might forget lines on stage (yes, one night I did, YIKES!)

Yours,
Daphne

Question #34:

Daphne,

I think your character is great on One Tree Hill, i think they should have brought your character in when they were in high school. Your girl version of nathans dad! Are you going to be on for the rest of the season? can you share any details?? just one :)

Ashley

Dear Ashley,

I loved playing evil Victoria on One Tree Hill! I think they should bring her back to get in the way more. I finished my role so far, but maybe they'll have me back next year! They do love the mean characters....yes I mean Dan. And I wasn't killed even.... But in the mean time, I am starring in and producing a TV movie...

May the B%#$* come back!
Daphne

Question #35:

Hello Daphne,

I am so glad to hear that both you, and Torrey will be on OTH this season. I miss BP terribly, and while you're probably tired of Beautiful People questions I was just wondering, if the show had continued, what kind of storylines would there had been? I'm just curious. Thanks!

Alyssa

Dear Alyssa,

As I've said before I wish BP went on. We had plans for a lot of other stuff. None of which I can remember anymore! But it was great to see Torrey in the makeup trailer again!

Daphne

Question #36:

Hi Daphne,

This is more complement than question. I really enjoyed your TED documentary. I hope you can do future TEDs as well. The first time I met Al Gore we were speakers at the Earth Summit in 92. I'm not aware that anyone fully documented that event, and it sort of faded into obscurity. I think you captured much the same energy in your TED film. I think it's important that events like this can have a life beyond the event itself. Keep up the good work.

Rob

Thank you Rob. It means a lot to us that so many people have been inspired by the film and the inner look at the TED conference.

Question #37:

Hi Daphne,

There's a facial tool on the market for home use that uses micro currents to stimulate muscles to help support the structure of the face. This tool can emit a metallic taste in the mouth due to mercury vapors from amalgam fillings. The company who sells this product claims it is perfectly safe and one should just open their mouth to release the vapors. I however have been under the impression that there are no safe levels of mercury vapors as they get into your tissues and then circulate in the blood. Can you please share your opinion on the safety of mercury being emitted in this way?

Many thanks,
Beverly

Dear Beverly,

Let's keep in mind MERCURY VAPORS ARE DANGEROUS! One should not inhale, swallow, or ingest in anyway mercury in any form because it is a potent nuerotoxin. When a bit of it spills in in school science labs often the labs and sometimes the school are closed-for a few days even-until experts wearing protective gear come in and remove all traces of mercury from the premises! I wouldn't want something vibrating against my face releasing the mercury from fillings into my mouth, even an open mouth.

Amalgams (silver fillings which can contain up to 50% mercury) release TOXIC vapors from eating, drinking warm liquids and just wear over the years. These vapors are inhaled and/or seep into our tissues and bloodstream-and don't forget the fact that our teeth and fillings are mere centimeters from our brain-where real trouble occurs from mercury!

I have had my fillings replaced with porcelain, gold, and newer substances used today. I recommend removing ALL silver fillings to avoid vapors. NOTE: I've been told to not mix gold and silver in the mouth, get ALL the silver (amalgams) out. Please ask your dentist to remove them in the proper and safe way.

Then treatments like the one you described may be fine!

Yours,
Daphne

Question #38:

Hi Daphne,

I am an engineer and travel some abroad. I recently had a bout with mercury poisoning doctors thought due to food I ate in Europe. I had heard through a friend that you had experienced the same and participate in awareness on this issue. I wanted to know if there is a group or foundation I could donate to on this important environmental issue.

Thanks, Rod

Dear Rod,

I am sorry to hear about your problem with mercury. My guess is that it was fish, seafood? That is where I know much mercury in food lies. You are another example of why we should support those who are fighting for a clean environment, we are all a part of it aren't we? Here are a few good organizations that I know personally and have supported, all of which fight hard to clean our waterways, which will also keep our seafood clean.

Gotmercury.org, Waterkeeper.org, Oceana.org

I hope you have detoxed and are healthy!

Daphne

Question #39:

Daphne,
I have enjoyed your career since "The Sure Thing", which is the best teen/young adult movie in my opinion. What is your beauty regime? How do you stay looking so young? How many episodes did you film of One Tree Hill?

Thank you.
Brenda

Dear Brenda,
Thank you! I think I am lucky from my father's side, he's latino and looks much younger than his 65+ years. I honestly believe my skin got less stressed and less lined when I started meditation! In addition to that I exfoliate with Revive which I found in NYC. And I use Mario Badescu Moisture Magnet cream, and now Stella McCartney's organic beauty line. AND I ALWAYS carry a Rosewater or Lavender spray in my purse, it feels great to spray and keep my skin moist!

I also keep active, hiking, yoga, walking, bike riding.....and rest!

I did 7 episodes One Tree Hill last year I believe, and am doing more this season!

Be well,
Daphne

Question #40:

While doing research for a piece on metals poisoning, I came across your moving article about your issues with mercury and its debilitating effects. Ten years ago, looking for a solution to the Tinnitus I was experiencing, I made a strong effort to rid myself of mercury and other potentially harmful metals. I had my three silver fillings removed, and did a round of chelation. I can't say that the mercury or other metals were exactly the cause of the Tinnitus, but I do take some comfort knowing that whatever effects me, the cause won't be from metals.

Mercury, as you know, is just one of many sources of pollution on our planet. Living in the United States, many of us are aware of the environmental degradation that has occurred within our borders. Our awareness and our efforts have caused many mining and energy corporations to look elsewhere, not only in other areas of our planet, but within our hemisphere.

I've had a lifelong commitment to our natural places having hiked, climbed and canoed over much of the west and north of our continent. My last three canoe expeditions have taken me to Canada's Far North, and there I've found vast tracts of land, harboring ecosystems that are intact, essentially primeval. But I've also found that these ecosystems are in danger, from mining and energy concerns that are looking to areas outside the mainstream of environmental scrutiny. The threat to these areas inspired me enough that I retired as a DP, to devote myself to making a difference, however small that might be, to protect these areas. An article I wrote on the dangers facing five great northern river systems, appeared in a recent Paddler Magazine.

One area that causes me the most immediate concern, is the Spatsizi Wilderness of Northern BC. At stake is a pristine area that encompasses the headwaters of three major rivers, the Stikine, the Nass and the Skeena, as well as an untold number of tributaries. Royal Dutch Shell believes that the Spatsizi Wilderness has potential as a major cold bed methane field and envision perhaps 20,000 producing wells in the area. Mining companies bc Metals and Fortune Minerals have explored for coal and metals, and say the area could produce for decades.

Many of the First Nations people in the Spatsizi, live very much a subsistence lifestyle, and feel that development in what they call the Sacred Headwaters, would irreparably damage the land. Along with many of the local elders, scientists David Suzuki and Wade Davis have joined the fight.

In his book, "The Last Wilderness", Nicholas Luard asked the basic question, "Why is wilderness worth saving?" Luard concluded that he didn\'t have an answer. My view is that if we put our craving for natural resources ahead of wilderness areas, we lose something of ourselves every time a river is polluted, or a species goes extinct.

I hope that it is not to forward of me to submit this to your web site. But I feel strongly enough about the environmental risks we face as a species, that I thought it worth the effort.

Regards,

Erich Volkstorf
Seattle

Dear Erich,

You are an inspiration. I hope you keep writing and informing everyone. Conservation International is an organization I would suggest you reach out to for support in protecting the Spatsizi Wilderness of Northern BC. You may know them because they have an office in Seattle. And Waterkeeper Alliance who has chapters in Canada.

I agree that we lose every time we destroy or compromise natural habitats. How can we not? We are nature too. Our bodies are natural systems. It's such a disappearance of respect for life, for ourselves as human beings.

Thank you for your letter!
Daphne

Question #41:

Daphne,
I'm curious to know how do you feel about Barack Obama's win and what top priorities do you feel he should address regarding the environment?
Jeannette

Dear Jeanette,
I am, as many are, thrilled. It's is a huge wonderful thing that Barack Obama is our next president. He seems to be putting together a good team to support him in doing ALL that was left for them to do. He will replace the George Bush's appointees in the EPA, which were horrible. We will finally have scientists, real experts informing Washington on the conditions of our environment and hopefully the message will become loud and clear. Bill Gallegos, an Environmental Justice leader was asked by Obama's transition team to go to Washington to consult. Bringing EJ to that table is fantastic! More green jobs need to be created, clean technology developed. What about even a "Low-tech" development department? Going simple, is really our way into cleaner, healthier living.

What do you think?!
Daphne

Question #42:

Daphne,
Being "Green" seems to be the new trend in Hollywood...do you think that it's just a trend or do you think its a long lasting change?
Gia Berkus

Well Gia,
Just like in everything, you'll have some really serious and caring people walking the talk, and for some it may be less so. People like to pick on Hollywood, but many green causes come to us, and use us, to get heard. This is here to stay, at least for some, in ways that the public doesn't see, things are changing here. Much of what is seen is just the surface, the media presents it in a "trendy" way.

Daphne

Question #43:

Daphne,
I recently viewed Modern Girls (which took me back to younger days)... I noticed in the internet (wiki) that your dad was from Guatemala. I always thought (given the last name, hair color and simply you non-traditional beauty), that you had some Hispanic ancestors, etc. If this is in fact the case do you speak Spanish? Also, do you identify with the Guatemalan (or Hispanic in general) cultures?

Thank you!
Jorge

Dear Jorge,

Yes, I am half Guatemalteca. Mi padre es de la ciudad, pero yo no hablo mucho espanol. I visited family in Guatemala when I was growing up, and my grandmother lived with me for a bit, so I have memories and understand first hand a bit about living there, through my relatives. I don't know what you mean by 'identify' with the hispanic culture, but I do have personal experiences, and a last name that made me want to support hispanic areas that are over burdened by environmental toxins. The thing is, Hispanics vote pro environment more than caucasians! AND they mobilize more than other communities! You can read more about them in my Environmental Justice page.

Paz,
Daphne

Question #44:

Daphne,
I've just recently been more concerned about how my lifestyle choices affect the environment - everything ranging from what I eat to what car I drive. Eager to learn more, I stumbled across your website. I've already read Crimes Against Nature on your favorite books list and loved it. Do you have any other environmental book recommendations?

Sincerely,
Tara

Dear Tara,

I am working on BLESSED UNREST by Paul Hawken. I like it! Ralph Waldo Emerson realized we are nature. I like his book NATURE AND OTHER STORIES. He talks about it more spiritually. It will only help us more quickly to really get that we are nature. We didn't just land on this planet, we came up from it.

Thank you for being willing to see that how you live matters. I have to stop and think about my choices every day.
Daphne

Question #45:

Hi Daphne,
I'm originally from Guatemala. My mom told me once that my family was related to your family. Who knows.

We love Spaceballs. We are watching it right now and went on your website. We saw the mercury info link and wanted to ask you what you thought about the new mandated Compact Fluorescent energy efficient lightbulbs which contain mercury and require toxic clean up if broken in a home?

Claudia

Hola Claudia,

Maybe we are related, I have a lot of relatives in Guatemala! I use the compact fluorescent bulbs. I know they have mercury in them, but SO very little. I have not had a problem. They last a lot longer. Don't forget, the less electricity we use, the less oil and coal we need from the earth. AND the less pollution formt he coal plants that produce our electricity. WHenever you can, support Clean energy!

Be well,
Daphne

Question #46:

Hi Daphne, I know you're an activist for a Greener America. I just have a question for ya.. It may be silly but I just wasnt sure.. I live in a small town in MI and we dont have the option of having a recycle bin for someone to pick up when they do trash, Where should I be taking the recyclable materials?? I wanna make a change for our community and have everyone recycle.. So I just wasnt positive where to be takin it and making sure it is being taken care of properly..

Thanks so much.
Lindsay

Dear Lindsay,

Since I don't know the town you live in, here is some info on MI recycling (How great is google?). The following link is a page with information of recycling in each county. Pick your county and call the closest center that appears. You may have to drive a bit, so you can collect it and even offer to bring a neighbor's goods, that may inspire them, and go every two weeks or something.
http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,1607,7-135-3585_4130---,00.html

and THIS page is a CLIMATE CHANGE CHECK SHEET I found! We should all print out and stick on the refrigerator.

Thanks so much for writing, asking is the only way we find out things!! Now you can tell others who have the same question.

Let us know how it goes!
Daphne

Question #47:

Hi Daphne, your contributions you are making to the planet are very commendable. My question is, have you been asked back to Melrose Place? It starts back this fall and two of the original cast members will be on it. I am sure you have a lot going on these days and I wasn't sure if you had any interest in seeing you back at 4616. I would definitely love to see you on there again.

With best wishes,
John

Hi John,

No I won't be there at the apartment building. If they ask me to go on for a guest star with a fun story line maybe I would. Doing Melrose Place was such an amazing time, and the show's success was a blast for us! I hope Thomas and Laura have fun doing this show, but it'll never be the same. :)

Daphne

Question #48:

In your film - which I loved and have just blogged appreciatively about, you credit your dad the philosopher for implanting the spark of curiosity that brought you to TED. Does Mom the Unitarian get some credit for that too? (I'm a philosopher with Unitarian leanings.) Thanks for your good work!

Phil

Dear Phil,

Ah! Yes, mom does get credit. Dad would say, "Your schoolyard is tiny Daphne, compared to our city, the planet, then the galaxy, then the Universe-which is infinite." Huh? But daddy, my school yard is really big. "No, it is smaller than the point of this needle." And then comes mom, "Everyone is the center of their own universe". When I said this out loud later in math class, "There are 17 centers of the Universe in this room!" no one knew what the hay I was talking about. You see Phil? This is why I feel comfortable and safe at TED. No one gives you weird looks. Finally a place that celebrates questions, and encourages human creativity--this is why I needed to make a movie. (Now, at snagfilms.com.)

Growing up Unitarian was good because it's open to all beliefs. On my mother's altar at the meeting house, there was a cross, a star of David, the yin/yang, the peace chalice, and E=mc2. After a life of looking around and asking questions; honoring nature, and in that, us, makes the most sense. The writings of Emerson, Thoreau, and Buddhism feel right to me.

Not sure what sense can be made of the fact that the daughter of two intellectual, non materialistic people, was possessed to go off to Hollywood at 17, but I know their outlooks have saved me more than once in all the years here.

Thanks for the blog, I had a look and really appreciate it!
Daphne
